U-2 with thick wing, N.N.Polikarpov

T
he first of the famous multi-role biplane line. It differed from successors by thick (14%) wing to provide maximum lift at low speed - and absolutely disappointing performance. Aircraft was made extremely robust (17g for case Ak) and easy to assemble, but on expense of bad airdynamic and more than 120kg overweight.
Aircraft had very bad climb even for primary trainer. It may be remembered as an example of extremities in design, when too much is paid for reliability and simplicity.
