nlike the I-16 Type 18, which was and intermediate variant with M-62 engine, the Type 24 was built in substantial numbers. New modification had strengthened structure, more rigid wing. The lone external difference was an inspection hatch on the rear starboard fuselage. Inside it carried more powerful M-63 engine, but...
I-16 Type 24 increased weight consumed almost completely added engine power. Its performance was slightly worser that of its predecessor, as was revealed during the State Trials in early 1940.
Some early batches of the Type 24 were powered with M-62 engine. All production aircraft had underwing wet points for 200l external tank, because the M-63 fuel consumption cut 'internal' range down to 440km...
