ANT-61, Tu-2S by A.N.Tupolev/ STO-3/OTB

variant built in large series. New engines with direct fuel injection provided more power, airframe was made even more technological. Electric, hydraulic and fuel systems were upgraded. Insufficiently powerful for second half of WWII ShKAS machineguns were replaced by more effective weapons.
In latest batches three-bladed propeller AV-5-167A was replaced with four-bladed with distinctive clipped blade tips (below).

This basic production type was first flown on August 26 1943, passed Factory and State Trials on December 16. In the early 1944 Tu-2S started its tour of duty. This medium bomber was superior over all Soviet, Allied and Enemy twin-piston-engine aircraft.
Late production variants were heavier than first (1943) large series (see data on Tu-2S page), because aircraft carried more equipment and defensive armament. Gained weight was compensated by airdynamic refinement and introducing new more efficient propellers.
Production continued until 1952. In service until 1955.
