rials of the R-3 with BMW engine helped to formulate requirements to reconnaissater with this powerplant. The R-7 design started in July 1928. Mockup was approved in March 1929, and on January 30, 1930 aircraft was flown first time.

The R-7 was a straight forward scaled-up R-3. More powerful engine allowed to increase armament (second synchronized machinegun added). Fuel tanks moved to the wing, internal bomb bay was introduced. Pilot seat was raised for better sight.

After State Acceptance trials (March 1930) R-7 was returned to TsAGI for minor modifications and installation of complete set of instruments. Aircraft did not return to trials and was abandoned because more conventional wooden R-5 was already in mass production. Moreover, the R-5 performance was not worser than one of R-7...
