ntroduction in 1940 of new heavy 12.7mm UB machinegun triggered development of the Type 29, the last mass production version of the I-16. New synchronized weapon was installed under the engine. As a result the T-shaped air intake of the I-16 Type 24 airframe was moved to the starboard side (at ~7:30).
The Type 29 was the best equipped of the I-16 family - most of those aircraft carried radio (on the starboard mast or behind the cockpit) and gun camera on the top of the dorsal spin.
Variety of underwing weapons included bombs (general purpose, fragmentation, incendiary, chemical) and 4-6 RS-82 rockets. Some carried reconnaissance camera under starboard wingtip.
