evelopment '62' long range bomber. Wing area and fuel capacity were increased. To carry heavier aircraft landing gear was strengthened, bigger wheels were installed.
Pilots cockpit was redesigned: instead of tandem seating in previous long range variants ('62', '65' and '67') pilot and co-pilot seats were placed side-by-side in widened cockpit. Glazing area was increased.
Defensive UBT machineguns were replaced by 20mm B-20 cannons on electrically driven turrets. Fourth B-20 was installed in upper nose. Bombload was increased to 4500kg.
Aircraft fas ready for flights in May 1947. All parameters except range suffered substantially. Acception Commetee expressed serious concerns about structural strength. Moreover, handling and stability were much worser than of other Tu-2 family aircraft.
This aircraft and its derivatives Tu-8B (AM-42 engines) and Tu-8S (ACh-30BF engines) had no future, because jet-powered '73' was already built and passing trials.
