D uring design period of the Tu-16 ('88')
long range bomber some alternative variants were considered. The '88/90' aircraft with AL-3 engine (in case of problems with
AL-5) was a backup option, ensuring that this bomber appears in time. Since
AL-3 thrust was less than that one of AL-5, it was decided that four AL-3 are to be mounted.
